Today, I’ve decided to expand the ‘Hits of the Past’ feature to spotlight two songs that were in the Singing News Top 10 in the respective month. This week, the feature focuses on August 1984 and two of the songs which were among the top 10 favorites.
#5 – “It Wasn’t Raining When Noah Built the Ark” – Hemphills
Written by Joel Hemphill, the tune gives a clear meaning behind God’s judgment. The Hemphills recorded this tune on their 1984 project, Together. Although Christ hasn’t returned to Earth, this song reminds people to make preparations for His coming.
#9 – “How Deep Is the Water?” – Gold City Quartet
“How Deep Is the Water?” is a unique look at drawing closer to God. Similar to the Cathedrals’ hit, “Step into the Water,” this tune develops more emphasis on the depth of the ‘water’. The tune became the first of many top 10 hits for Gold City from Sandy Knight. Tim Riley & Brian Free take the lead on the 3 verses on this album from their 1983 release, I Think I’ll Read It Again.
